Michael A. Goldstein zealously represents individuals charged in both the State and Federal Courts. Michael was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1996 and to the United States District Court, Central District in 1997. Originally formed by James A. Goldstein in 1975, Michael joined his father in 1996. Jim and Michael have worked closely together ever since and enjoy a reputation as aggressive, compassionate and ethical attorneys amongst their peers and adversaries alike.
Michael has litigated hundreds of felony and misdemeanor criminal matters, representing client’s in the state and federal courts of California, Arizona, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, Mississippi, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Michael has successfully handled major narcotics cases, assault cases, DUI’s, homicide cases as well as several other serious matters. Michael has represented doctors, lawyers, athletes, entertainers, entertainment executives, career criminals, and foreign nationals facing immigration consequences.
Michael has litigated several highly sophisticated fraud and narcotics cases and recently obtained a dismissal for a client indicted in a massive cocaine seizure with a street value of more than $11 million. Michael also currently represents a client who is charged as a co-conspirator in a $45 million multi-ton drug seizure. Michael Goldstein obtained a favorable plea deal for a client charged in the largest welfare fraud case in Los Angeles County history. In that case, our client, a county employee, misappropriated more than $800,000 of county funds.
Under the appropriate circumstances, Michael can secure confidential and professional help for clients suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. Michael works closely with a network of treatment facilities, intervention specialists and therapists to expeditiously secure the appropriate care when needed. This knowledge has also proven helpful for family members who may not possess the knowledge to do so, or might be unwilling to take on this difficult task. Where appropriate, time spent in a reputable residential treatment facility or local trustee jail can serve as an alternative to incarceration. In fact, the California Penal Code specifically permits a Judge to credit time spent in a medical or rehabilitation facility against any jail time imposed. (Penal Code sections 2900.5 & 4019) Alternative sentencing can be a viable option if effectively negotiated by your defense attorney. Michael is an advocate of alternative sentencing and his comprehensive network of experts provide his clients with the best chance to avoid incarceration.
Michael is an active member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Criminal Court Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association and San Fernando Valley Bar Association. Michael volunteers for Public Counsel and has provided volunteer legal assistance at the Salvation Army Men’s Rehabilitation program in the past.
